Dr.KAWAHATS sent an e-mail and told us that he was successful to make contact with Ms KIRVESNIEMI in Finland. Ms KIRVESNIEMI is called "the queen of crosscountry skiing." Dr.KAWAHATSU told us about the matter.
KAWAHATS: Yesterday I stayed all through the night in the university office and kept calling. Beause of the time lag, I had to call Finland around two or three o'clock in the morning.
IIZUKA: Did she called you back from Finland?
KAWAHATS: No. I just kept calling. I did not know her telephone number. So I found a company related to her and asked her cell phone number. When I first called her, male voice replied in Finnish which I don't understand. I didn't know what to do. A few hours later I called again. This time a lady answered "Maria Lisa." I was relieved.
IIZUKA: Did you talk to her in Finnish?
KAWAHATS: No. I talked in English. But we could not communicate very well in English. So we are going to talk again about the detail when a translator is with us.

クロスカントリーの女王とも呼ばれるフィンランドのキルヴェスニエミさんと連絡がとれたむね、北海道大学の川初先生からメールをいただく。そこで、先生に電話で話を伺う。
川初 昨日は大学に泊まり込んで連絡をとってました。時差があるので、フィンランドの人に電話するとなると夜中の2時3時ということになる。
飯塚 先方から電話がいただけたのですか。
川初 いやいや、こちらからかけたのです。私はキルヴェスニエミさんの連絡先もしらなかったので、関係する会社にかけて、彼女の携帯番号を教えていただいた。最初かけたらフィンランド語の応答メッセージが流れてきて面くらいましたよ。後でもう一度かけたら「マリア りサ・・・」と声がしたのでほっとしました。
飯塚 先生はフィンランド語もできるのですか。
川初 英語で話したのだけれど、彼女は英語がそんなに話せない。金曜日に英語の話せる人がくるから、その時にくわしく話しをすることになっています。
